Dental implants

Beautiful Hollywood smile? Yes, it possible even if you have missing teeth. They will be replaced using dentures, bridges or dental implants.

Missing teeth are, contrary to popular belief, not only an aesthetic problem, but first of all affect our health: the teeth either side can tilt, drift into the gap causing further tooth loss. Missing teeth (especially molars) impair the chewing functions leading to diseases of stomatognathic and alimentary systems. That is why it is good to replace the space very soon.

The best, although often the most expensive, solution is dental implantation.

The dental implant is nothing more than an intraosseous implant, a titanium screw similar in size to the tooth root, which forms his artificial replacement. Dental implant is placed into the jawbone. Once it is done, a prosthetic denture or “artificial” tooth (crown) can be placed onto the implant.
Prosthetic dentures are used in case of larger defects (missing several teeth). Implant-supported dentures can be fixed on as few as two implants per jaw.

The implant surgery is a surgical procedure, it is therefore necessary to perform it only by experienced dentists.

Read, how the implantation procedure looks, on an example of treatments performed by Jacek Dawidowicz M.D. from Dental Clinic in Warsaw (Poland), recommended by a medical tourism portal Go4HealthTravel.com.

Each treatment is preceded by taking a pantographic picture or conical beam computed tomography (CBCT). This examination shows, among others, whether the amount of bone tissue is sufficient for implant placement. If not, in many cases a bone augmentation (maxillary or mandibular alveolar ridge) is possible.
This step is generally required in the case where the missing tooth has not been replaced in time, and loss of bone tissue in the area is very advanced.

Depending on the used method of bone defects reconstruction, their recovery can take up to 6 months, although mostly it takes 2 - 3 months. Implantation can occur only after bone regeneration.

The first step of the procedure is drilling with the hand-piece of a small-diameter hole in a bone (maxillary or mandibular alveolar ridge), where the implant is to be placed. This phase lasts not longer then 2 hours.

The implant is a foreign body, made of biologically friendly metal, which has to be knitted with a bone. This process is called osseointegration and takes between 3 and 6 months, depending on the place where the implant is placed (osseointegration in the jaw usually takes longer than in the mandible).

Are dental implants safe?

Yes, they are usually made of titanium, one of the mostly safe, biologically friendly materials, which additionally supports osseointegration process. It’s worth mentioning importance of the choice of the implant, in particular as regards the material on which it is made. Therefore, it is important to use proven products from reputable companies. It's important for our health security.

When the osseointegration process is finished, it’s possible to go to the next stage consisting re-exposing the implant and fixing the healing screw, which support the shaping of soft tissue (gum) and prepares it for the prosthetic denture (or crown).

Finally, once the bone and gum have healed, means after 2 weeks more or less, a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or denture can be placed and fixed over the dental implant. Actually the prosthesis is placed not directly on the implant (it would be too easy ☺ ) but on an abutment – a connector between the implant and the crown (or other type of prosthesis).

Dentists use implants not only in case of single teeth missing but also for replacing of several teeth missing (multiple tooth implants). The prosthetic dentures are placed on two or three implants, after the osseointegration and healing process.

How much do the dental implants cost?

The lowest price for an implant made on the cheapest materials is about 650 Euro (1800 PLN, in average 700-800 Euro (3000 PLN) for the mostly used products. Additionally you have to pay for the abutment and the crown (or denture). These prices are also depend on used materials and range from 150 Euro (600 PLN) for the cheapest parts and 500 Euro (2000 PLN) for the better quality products.

How you can see, dental implants are not the cheapest solution, but are worth the money – they are the most functional and aesthetic solution.

Properly placed dental implants accurately reproduce the functionality of the natural teeth and the properly prepared dental prosthesis are not different in colour and shape from their crowns.
